Don’ Want to Spend Money for a New Tub?

Tips on Bathtub Refinishing

It is not uncommon for homeowners that are having a bathroom remodel done to choose to perform bathtub refinishing

instead of buying an entirely new unit. However, there are some steps for refinishing a bathtub properly, ranging from preparing the tub, sanding down the finish, and then applying the correct paint. Many home improvement experts advise only resurfacing tubs made from porcelain, as ones made from plastic or composite materials will not be as suitable for this type of procedure. It is vital homeowners take the time to choose the paint color and finish to match the rest of the bathroom colors.

Before refinishing any tub, the surface of the tub needs to be thoroughly prepared. Thus allowing the new finish to stick properly, the surface must be completely cleaned. Any non slip items need to be removed using a heavy duty cleaner in addition to being a degreasing agent. We, at PMCA Bathtub & Tile Refinishing Specialist, also suggest the bathtub be cleaned using an abrasive cleaner and pad to make sure that no soap scum, dirt, or other debris is left on the tub. For heavily soiled or older tubs, this cleaning process could have to be repeated two or even three times.

Once this is done, it then has to be prepared for the paint. Refinishing a tub requires sanding the tubs surface using 400 or 600 grit sandpaper. This makes sure all the dirt, grease, and previous finish is totally removed. It roughs up the surface also, allowing the new paint to stick properly to the tub. We recommend using wet sandpaper so the particles lifted can be simply washed down the drain.
